Splitting Tools

Several weeks ago a friend cut down a dead hickory tree and knowing how much Art loves his hardwoods, dropped it off to us.  The weather was beautiful and we were falling behind on our wood splitting so we decided to start with the hickory trunk. Even after Art cut up the trunk into pieces, those pieces were heavy-even for Art, so he hooked up this thing he bought at an auction months ago. It's a wood hook- it looks a little like curved scissors and you hook the points of each of those scissor ends into either side of the wood and when you lift it, the force of the weight pushes those scissor ends deeper into the wood.  Then you can take it anywhere (or place it on a wood splitter) without breaking your back.

We finished the hickory but with the shorter days it's getting harder and harder to stay ahead of the splitting- but it's fine as we have enough wood for the winter.
