Helen and Keller Are No More

Helen is gone. Off to the Kalona Sale Barn to be bought by the highest bidder. Hopefully her uterus will stay in so we get a better price...

She was doing fine and her uterus was staying put, but yesterday Art said it was out again and she looked really uncomfortable (who wouldn't?). The earliest we could get her into a butcher was September 8 and we weren't sure she would last that long. She wasn't sick, but our fear was that in three weeks she might develop an infection and then we wouldn't be able to butcher her (well, we could, but I wouldn't want eat it) and instead have to treat her or put her down. So we chose the most cost effective solution- sell her. Her uterus was back in today and she's a good looking heifer who may or may not be with calf, so hopefully we will get a good price for her. It's just unfortunate that I will have to wait another six or eight months for homegrown steak.
