Female Troubles

Helen is prolapsing. This means that her uterus is coming out which is really gross. We weren't sure at first what was happening, whether she was pushing out a calf prematurely (in which case the red balloon hanging out of her butt would the amniotic sac) or if it was her uterus. We had the vet come over to check it out and she took one look at it and said "yep, that's her uterus". The vet said she could push it back in and sew it shut (with a big needle and thread that looked like shoe string) until she calves, but the odds of the calf and her uterus coming out are pretty high. If that happens, they can put the uterus back in but we wouldn't be able to breed her again (well, we could, but that wouldn't very nice). Honestly, we're not entirely sure Helen's bred other than Peggy is still suckling. The vet offered to push the uterus back in and check to see if she was pregnant, but we decided just to leave it and take her to the Tipton Locker on Monday. I'm out of steaks, anyway. The vet did leave some sleeves (really long gloves- they cover all the way to the shoulder) so that if the uterus falls out farther, we can push it back in. Well, Art can push back in.

Helen doesn't appear uncomfortable; she doesn't even appear to notice that her uterus is hanging out. You would think that something like that might be awkward or even make her uneasy, but she's just eating and chewing her cud like it's any other day. I would certainly be distressed (and a little disgusted) if my uterus was hanging out.
