A couple of nights ago we went out to eat, leaving Buddy at home. This not an uncommon occurrence as Buddy is left home alone everyday. But before we got home, a thunderstorm started rolling through; by the time we got home, Buddy was a mess. Buddy is afraid of anything loud, sudden, or oddly shaped. If we're home when it storms, his anxiety usually manifested a in heavy-breathing, must-be-touching-you-at-all-times kind of way. If we're not home, he pretty much loses any and all cognitive thought process- meaning he just goes nuts- he hides in the shower, sheds everywhere, and paces endlessly. The other night was no different. When we got home, he ran outside and if you didn't know him better, would think he was really happy and excited to see us (which he probably was) but because we know him as well as we do, we could see the panic on his face and in every jerky movement. I went inside and tried to get him to come in with me while Art went to the barn (keep in mind it's still lightning and thundering), but Buddy showed no interest (like I said, he loses his senses). After a few minutes I heard Art yelling, "get out of the car!", and I knew what must have happened. Art, who had forgotten something in the car) opened the car door and Buddy jumped in and refused to come out. When he is this afraid, he is absolutely inconsolable and does really stupid things. Art was so frustrated and kept yelling at him, but because Buddy was out of his mind, Art was only making it worse so I told him to go inside and that I would take care of it.
Twenty minutes later, after much cajoling, pushing, shoving, and attempting to lift an 80 pound dead weight out of the backseat of a two-door car, Art (having cooled down) came out and easily lifted Buddy up and out of the car. (Art felt really bad for yelling at Buddy and made sure to cuddle him once we were inside.)
My car is
covered in dog hair.
He kept wedging himself as far away from either door I tried to him out of.
Do you see the panic?
He also tried hiding his face, I'm assuming he thought if he couldn't see me, I couldn't see him.

Don't feel bad Buddy, I still do that "if I can't see you, you can't see me" thing. :)
