More Hayin'

Well, the hay is in.

Saturday we split some big logs as they were being stored on the wagaon rack that would be needed later for the hay. Once that was finished, I finished stacking the wood while Art did one last raking of the hay to make sure all the dew was out of it. It was a beautiful day...although sitting on the tractor isn't very taxing but Art, being decked out in long pants, a t-shirt, and a hat, felt the heat more than I did. We only had the big field to bale and it's was nice not racing against the weather. This is the best crop of hay we've made in two years! I don't think we had one crop of hay last summer that didn't get rained on at least once. I almost enjoyed baling the hay this time around since it was so relaxed.
Almost.
We baled 240 bales and were pretty tired Saturday. I will say that I did an excellent job driving the tractor (it only took me five years to get the hang of it!) I hardly missed any of the hay and the stuff I did miss wasn't even my fault (I may have been guilty in the past of daydreaming while driving and not paying close attention to the hay row). Art will tell you the wind made the rows a little wonky and wide and it certainly could not be blamed on his raking ability (which is superb). Sunday morning Art woke me up at 6:30 in the morning and told me it looked like rain to the West (which it did) so I got my butt out of bed and we started unloading the hay- all before my morning coffee. By 7:15 I was sweating like I had just finished a triathalon. I felt so out of shape and was considering joining a gym but then Art informed me that the bales "were a little heavier" this time, meaning: each bale was at least seventy pounds. I didn't feel so bad and promptly gave up my resolution of working out. We had the hay in the barn by 9:oo am and, wouldn't you know it, it never rained.

(That's me driving the tractor, just cleaning up the field a little. And yes, I am awesome.)
