The Island of Misfit Cows

Meet our newest addition to what has become the Island of Misfit Cows: Peg-Leg (nicknamed 'Peggy'). She's a two month old heifer (girl) who, while being moved into a new barn along with 220 other calves, broke her back leg. Art spoke to the vet and he said the leg would heal (maybe not straight, but it'll heal) but would need to be allowed to lay and rest. The farmer that owned all the calves didn't have the time or space for that and was going to put her down. But Art, being the kind soul that he is, didn't like the idea of killing a perfectly good animal and told him we would take her. She gets around pretty well on three legs but the back leg flops around a lot. Hopefully in a few weeks, after much resting and eating, she'll be back on her feet (or hooves). She joins Helen and Keller, our half blind cows.

She was weaned a couple of weeks ago and while we were going to give her milk replacer anyway, we decided to try and bottle feed her in the hopes that it would make her more friendly (or at least not as jumpy, especially during the healing process) Art is also going to try and give her arnica, a homeopathic remedy- but we'll see how that plays out!
